Make flowers out of coffee filters!

Yes, you read the title correctly.  There is a way to make beautiful paper flowers out of coffee filters. I read about this idea so many times last year around blogland, but I never took the time to read how it was done.

A few weeks ago, I was planning a birthday party for my daughter.  She decided on a Laua themed party.  Laua+ Hawaii+Beach+ Party = The need for flowers.  So in my search on how to make big flowers, I came up with this method by mixing up everything I read on PINTEREST and taking the best to create these flowers.  Here's how you can make very, very inexpensive party decorations or a sweet flower centerpiece.

I bought a pack of 125 coffee filters at the Dollar Tree.   They were the 3 and 1/4 inch size.  For this project, you will need 8 filters per flower.

Set 4 of the filters aside. I'll call these the large filters. The other 4 filters need to be cut down a bit, about 1/4 inch.  Fold the filters in half and cut all 4 at the same time if you can, muscles help but sharp shears are even better.  I'll call the cut filters "smaller filters" for the rest of this tutorial.

Now, the next steps are for all the filters, small and large, but they can only be done one at a time.
One at a time, fold the filters again.

Fold for a 3rd time

And fold for a 4th time.  It will look like this.

Snip the edge of the filter on the folded side, NOT the open side.

I realized later that the deeper the snip, the more the petals will stand out.

When you open it up, it will look like this.

Take your scissors again and round the edges.
Awww, look at the heart!  I "Lewisville" LOVE it!
This is what it will now look like when you open it up.  Repeat the above steps for the rest of the filters, both small and large.

Now you're ready to start making the flowers.  You will need 6-8 inches of flower wire.  Loop it at the top so it looks like this.

Poke a hole through the middle of one of the smaller filters.

Add a dab of glue and twist the bottom the filter as you pinch it together.

Add another "SMALL"  filter and pinch then twist. Add/ pinch/twist. Add /pinch/ twist. Use your "SMALL" filters first, then add/pinch/twist the "Large" filters.

I added dabs of glue every 2-3 filters.  Any glue will work.  I happen to use Mod Podge but Elmer's school glue and even a hot glue gun will work fine as well.

I made sure I used a bit of glue on the last filter to hold all my twisting in place better.  I also used regular scotch tape around the bottom of the last filter to keep it all together.  Floral tape would work great here, but I was out.  Since I was out of floral tape, I decided to add ribbon to the stems.

Then, to keep in the color scheme of our little shindig, I spray painted a few of the flowers.  Yup, you can spray paint paper, just do it carefully and don't drench the paper.

Here's the final product.  Sweet results, don't you think?

I made several flowers and set them around the party area.  Everything cost  $1 since I already had the spray paint in my garage, and yes, I still have plenty of coffee filters left over for my morning cup!

Hope you all have a fabulous weekend.  Stay cool!  I hear the country will be boiling the next few days.

Blessings,
Lisa

  20. OMG. I have been making diff filter flowers and now I have another EASY one. I did not even think about spray painting them. I have painstakingly been dying them with craft paint and alcohol for a "stained" look. Thank you for the tute
